Benefit for "Big John" Evans

Big John
Big John is one of our rare and true "Bluesmen" in our region. He has backed many of the blues legends that have passed through our area over many years. He is a working musician and that's how he pays his bills. If he can't work, he can't make his normal monthy bills.
We, the Sacramento Blues Society, and you, the local blues community are being called upon to give a little love and support to one of our own that's in need of some help.

The folks at Marilyn's On K have graciously offered up their facility for this event on February 11, 2006 - 1:00 PM to 5:30 PM.

Springfield Black History Month Tribute to be held, Thursday, February 9, 2006 (6 pm) at the Pan African Historical Museum at Tower Square Mall (2nd floor)

(AANEWSWIRE) Springfield, MA… Black History Month 2006 will hold special significance for residents of Springfield, Massachusetts. Two great people, one who was born and raised in Springfield, and one who spent many years in Springfield will be recognized during the Black History Month tribute celebration at Springfield's Pan African Historical Museum USA. With the theme of Education, Leadership and Community Service, this event will remember Carole Fredericks and Robert M. Hughes, two outstanding citizens who spent their lives educating others. Their legacies have had an impact on the education of students in the Springfield School System and their contributions will continue to inspire communities across Massachusetts and the country.
The celebration will also recognize present day African American inspirations (TBA) who are making a valuable contributions to Springfield as well. The event will begin at 6pm, on Thursday, February 9, at the Pan African Historical Museum USA (PAHMUSA), 1500 Main Street (Second Floor), Tower Square, Springfield.
In honor of Carole Fredericks, the event will highlight the Springfield School’s Foreign Language Department adoption of Tant Qu’Elle Chante, Elle Vit (As Long as She Sings, She Lives), a French language unit based on her life and music.  A native of Springfield and educated in the city schools, Carole Fredericks emigrated to France in 1979.  She became an international recording artist in Europe and Africa. Her siblings, American blues icon Taj Mahal, Edward Fredericks, Richard Fredericks and Connie Fredericks-Malone will return to Springfield to participate in the Black History Month Reception at PAHMUSA.
“From humble beginnings in Springfield, Carole evolved into a consummate performer, humanitarian and citizen of the world in France,” stated Connie Fredericks-Malone, Director of CDF Music Legacy. “To have this language unit, Tant Qu’Elle Chante, Elle Vit, adopted by the school system that first educated her is a great honor for our family.”
In recognition of Robert M. Hughes, a new book about his extraordinary life will be unveiled. Hughes' efforts showed that, when given the opportunity, Springfield’s urban students can achieve academic and personal excellence. Retired French teacher and wife of the Robert M. Hughes, Amy Hughes, will unveil a new book to be published in honor of her late husband.
This event is jointly sponsored by UnityFirst.com and the Pan African Historical Museum in cooperation with CDF Music Legacy and several community-based organizations and businesses.

Of course, today is the day that Lee Rocker's Racin' The Devil hits the streets and we're starting off with a BANG!

Lee starts out being the #1 Most Added on the Americana Music Chart with 14 adds this week (edging out Shawn Mullins and Roseanne Cash for the #1 slot). Check out the chart at

AMA Playlist for week of Mon, Jan 30, 2006

In addition to starting out as the #1 Most Added, we also had two key reviews run.

gives Racin' The Devil 3 stars

Lee Rocker, Racin' the Devil (* * *) The Vince Ray cover looks like pure '50s-goth shtick, but the music from the former Stray Cats bassist thumps hard and stays remarkably affectation-free. On Ramblin' and The River Runs, Brophy Dale and Buzz Campbell's dueling guitars emphasize the "billy" in "rockabilly," while a minor-key overhaul of Rock This Town shows that Rocker still has some fresh ideas for the oft-revived genre.
-Brian Mansfield

Philip Van Vleck gives high praise to Racin' The Devil

After all these years, Stray Cats principal Lee Rocker is still very much enthralled by rockabilly..."Racin' the Devil" is essentially the apex of the style. This disc is pure ducktails and bobby sox, replete with twang-rich guitars, doghouse bass and hard-rocking tunes. The band delivers slick, top-notch performances, and Rocker's vocals are terrific. He also wrote nine of the dozen tracks, and his songwriting is one of the project's greatest strengths. -Philip Van Vleck

Both great reviews that are just the start of the press that we'll be seeing on this release.

I'll forward any additional updates as they come in. If you have any questions of need anything regarding Lee, just let me know.

Keith Thompson’s Strange Brew

Line-up: Keith Thompson - voc. git; Patsy Gamble – sax, voc., keys; Neil Simpson – bass; Roy Adams – drums

BLIND PIG SIGNS JOHN NEMETH

Blind Pig Records has announced the signing of vocalist and harmonica player John Nemeth to a multi-record recording agreement. Nemeth, now living in San Francisco, has recently been touring with Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets, filling in for the legendary Sam Meyers.
After witnessing Nemeth give a stellar vocal and dynamic harp presentation at San Francisco's Biscuits and Blues club, label head Jerry Del Giudice expressed "how impressed I was with John's performance the one time I got the chance to see him. In our nearly 30 years in the business we have never before offered a new artist a recording contract on the strength of one performance. We believe John has the drive, intelligence, self discipline and talent to realize his career goals."

Nemeth, a 30 year old native of Boise, Idaho, started singing in church as a child and played in bands as a teenager. In 2002 he began touring with Junior Watson, playing Scandinavia, Canada, and the U.S. In 2005 he worked in Mexico and Thailand. Said Nemeth, "I feel very fortunate to be the newest member of the Blind Pig family. I am grateful for their support and belief in my abilities."

Dear Friedrich,

We're back from Memphis! Whew, what great fun.

Of course, we're a little disappointed that Sumac didn't advance to the finals, but she took it in stride and flashed her beautiful smile just the same. The winning band came from the same venue (Hard Rock Cafe) that Sumac's band drew, so we were up against the best (again!). Thanks to everyone that supported the band and the Sacramento Blues Society.

It was great seeing familiar faces, places, hanging out with SBS members that made the trip and meeting new friends from all over the map.

We're thinking of putting together a package for SBS members next year, so start planning for the 23rd International Blues Challenge in Memphis - 2007!

Keep supporting the 'blues' around your area!

Here is how things turned out in the finals in Memphis. Keep an eye out for these people, I'm sure they will be doing some festivals this coming season.

Eden Brent, sponsored by Blues Foundation affiliate, Mississippi Delta Blues Society of Indianola MS, was judged best in the solo/duo competition Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday night at the New Daisy Theater, Joey Gilmore, the South Florida Blues Society representative took first place honors in the band division. Aunt Kizzy'z Boyz, with the Blues Lovers United of San Diego finished second and Jill West and Blues Attack from the Blues Society of Western, PA placed third. The Albert King Award for most promising guitarist was awarded to Zack Weisinger with the Jill West and Blues Attack.

Again, thanks to you for supporting Sumac's Soul Heaven Band and the SBS!!

Continue to support your local blues clubs, the Sacramento Blues Society and festivals in the area, AND remember to 'BOOGIE' responsibly!

Save me a seat, Willie
