High Energy CD Release Party - Sons of Hermann Hall Saturday, July 14th
It's the CD release party for "Dope Slap Soup", Randy McAllister's latest CD release. Randy McAllister and Mike Morgan take the stage for a high energy celebration at the legendary Sons of Hermann Hall, 3414 Elm Street in Dallas. Scheduled for Saturday, July 14th at 9:00 pm the party starts. Don't miss this celebration as Randy McAllister, Mike Morgan and the band bring it home for the release of Randy's 8th album containing some of his most exciting work to date.

You'll see why, Randy McAllister along with Eric Clapton was one of only two artists to be nominated in three international categories for Australia's 2007 Blue Star Awards this year. What the press are saying: "the best America has too offer. The man is a Master of Americana" - RootsTime “One of the Worlds Top... Blues Artists” - Big City Blues Magazine “Absolutely stunning...” - Baltimore Bluesrag “Listen closely, you just heard the thunder clap of a music legend!" - World Entertainment Network -

Years in the making "Dope Slap Soup" is packed full of new material and a great excuse for a "blast the doors down" concert and release party. Most of the songs on the new album are written and arranged by Randy with tracks 2 and 7 written by Mike Morgan and track 1 arranged by Matt Woodburn and Randy McAllister. Get ready to love this album. Great songs with original stories, rich vocals and that soulful harmonica by Randy McAllister. The guitar solos will amaze you by Matt Woodburn, Mike Morgan, Mitchell Smithey and Todd Blalock. Playing an inspired Bass the legendary Sonny Collie. On B-3 and Piano Mike Hanna and Tim Allexander. Drums were exceptional with Chuck "Popcorn" Louden, Danny Cochran and Randy McAllister taking a turn. Randy's background vocalists were Benita Arterberry-Burns and Angie McWhirter. Great appreciation and thanks to Garith Roberts for his interest and support in getting this album out. For a fun night of new music, plan to make the celebration July 14th at 9:00pm. Tickets $15 at the door.

GREGG WRIGHT

Hi Sissy and Fritz.
Greetings Friends and Music Lovers.

Well, here we are at the halfway point of 2007, and things are moving along. Had a great time at Monterey  and Long Beach. The crowds were fantastic, and I had a chance to catch up with old friends and make a few new ones. I don't know what's gonna happen in the the coming months, but Boy the atmosphere is total static at the moment! Big changes are in the air. Hopefully, they'll be for the better for all living things, great and small. Good or bad, I seem to be tapping into the static and writing some totally crazy stuff, for the new CD. Stay tuned!

I've had my first written piece as a (get this) journalist, published in the Monterey Bay Blues Festival's 2007 Festival Program. It's an article titled "From Contestant to Judge". Basically,it talks about my experiences and observations going from a contestant at the 2005 Monterey Blues Fest's "Battle of the Blues Bands" to being a Judge on the 2006 "BOBB." I hope to get permission to put it on our website for everyone that couldn't make this year's festival, to get a chance to read it.

Will be making a return to Great Britain, after a layoff of 18 months, in late October. Looking forward to seeing you all and catching up on a few pints of the old real ale! Watch for U.K. dates!

Recently added a MySpace page to our arsenal of communication. I've been dead set against this for some time. I didn't want to give ol' Rupert Murdoch any more license to completely rule all things media on an interplanetary basis. Jeez . . . doesn't this guy own enough newspaper, cable outlets, radio stations and air already? My Buddy Zac Harmon, finally convinced me I was being stubborn and silly. Also, that it was too late to resist!! That while I'd been sleeping, the world had already been taken over by Murdoch Oiks!!!  Anyway, check out www.MySpace.com/GreggWright

Best,
Gregg

Rear View Mirror

by John Hulsman

The Steve Freund Trio at the Warehouse Restaurant in Port Costa, May 27 & July 1, 2007.

Steve Freund is an underappreciated treasure living in Vallejo , California . A native of New York , he honed his skill as a blues guitarist during 20-plus years in Chicago working with Sunnyland Slim, Floyd Jones, Big Walter Horton, Hubert Sumlin and others before moving to California . Freund plays the blues soulful, slow and spare with a mellow sound. Not the eardrum splitting, soulless staccato of notes passed off as the blues by some other nationally touring "blues" performers. For reasons unknown to me, Freund doesn't seem to have any gigs in the Sacramento Valley . His closest regular venue is the Warehouse Restaurant in Port Costa.

The Warehouse is an ideal location for blues music. It is literally the roadhouse at lands end. The only things separating the gravel parking lot from the Carquinez Strait are the railroad tracks. The music is played outdoors on a small shaded patio adjoining the restaurant building. The setting at the Warehouse fits the emotion at the heart of the blues. Words such as timeworn and funky don't do justice to the place. However, the BBQ is great. There is a huge selection of imported beers, reasonably priced domestic beer and a free buffet with the purchase of a drink.

Robi Bean, on drums, and Tim Wagar, on bass guitar, complete the trio and are a perfect compliment to Freund, solid but never overpowering. After playing a Stratocaster during the first set on 27 May, Freund has chosen to play a Gibson Les Paul that has a really sweet tone - perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. The occasional passing of UP, BNSF and Amtrak trains set the stage for songs like So Many Roads and Love in Vain. Songs such as those are also a good fit to Freund's voice, which has a certain plaintive quality. The trio plays approximately thirty songs during the afternoon and about a third of them are instrumentals, permitting Freund to fully demonstrate his talent with the guitar. The repertoire includes blues standards, such as Born Under A Bad Sign, and Freund's own compositions, such as "C" For Chicago - a song about his life in Chicago and his move to California . The Steve Freund Trio is one of the best true blues bands in Northern California . Their next appearance at the Warehouse will be on August 12th. For those of you on the east side of the valley, they will appear at the Sierra Blues Benefest in Auburn on August 25th. The Steve Freund Trio is not to be missed!

Dear Friedrich,

Yikes! It has been hot as a firecracker here in Northern California. The SBS has completed our venture into 'fireworks' sales and want to thank everyone that came out and helped!

The Americana Ramble at Marilyn's on Wenesday features The Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band. Mindy Giles says of them, "They are down and dirty raucous Delta blues. Wild doesn't begin..", and Mike Breen of the Cincinnati City Beat described them, "Rousing, hyper, and authentic brand of blues that sounds like what might come out of that secret meth lab nestled deep in the backwaters of the Mississippi Delta." This show should be fun.

This Friday continues to be hot with blues around the area. One can see & hear: Eric Burton at the Crest Theater, Jeff Watson in the Blue Room Lounge, Johnny Knox with Dave Croall & the Soothers in Rocklin, Mick Martin & The Blues Rockers on stage at the Torch, Tommy Castro performing at The Palms in Winters, the Whitewater Blues Band in Marysville or the Wingnut Adams Blues Band up at the Iron Door Saloon in Groveland.

On Saturday in Auburn is the Placer SPCA's BBQ & Blues featuring many of our locals along with Lou Deluca, Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers and headlining "Pigboy Crabshaw", Elvin Bishop. Making an appearance at the Torch Club in the evening is John Lee Hooker, Jr.!

On Sunday, July 15 the Sacramento Blues Society is presenting "Bay Area Blues Blast" starting at 2:00 PM. For this show we will be in the Blue Room Lounge @ the Clarion Hotel and featuring some great blues musicians from our neighbors down West Interstate 80; from the Bay Area Blues Society, The Caravan of All Stars w/Ronnie Stewart and from Oakland/SF Bay Area, the Delta Wires. SBS members receive a $2 discount (show your card).

Thanks to Salli Squitieri and Gabriel Butterfield for organizing this wonderful event.

>>>>> Rod Hicks Mugged: This just in from Gabriel Butterfield: Famous bass master Rod Hicks (bassist with Paul Butterfield, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder), was mugged and robbed on July 4th. Rod was walking back from the grocery store, and was surrounded by three people who proceeded to rob and beat him. Support can be shown by sending cards to:

Rod Hicks

Gabriel reports that Rod is still planning to make it to the above-mentioned PBFS event.

>>>>> Delmark Records Chief Bob Koester honored at 2007 Jazz Journalists Association Awards: Bob Koester, owner of Chicago's Jazz Record Mart and Delmark Records, was honored in New York on June 28 at the 2007 Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards. Bob Koester was presented with a "Team Award" for "activists, advocates, altruists, aiders, and abettors of jazz". For a complete list of all of this year’s winners, which include artists, radio, photographers, authors, and more, click here. Bob Koester has been a leading advocate for both blues and jazz in Chicago since the late 1950s. Bob Koester's record store, Jazz Record Mart, is perhaps the greatest retail outlet for jazz and blues in the world. Bob Koester's label, Delmark Records, has released half a century of landmark recordings in both blues and jazz. In addition to Bob Koester's many great achievements, Bob Koester has mentored generations of music movers and shakers, including Bruce Iglauer of Alligator Records, Amy Van Singel (formerly of Living Blues Magazine), Michael Frank of Earwig Music, Chuck Nessa of Nessa Records, and Bob Corritore. Bob Corritore has put together a couple great photo pages of images from the Delmark blues files. To see these pages, click here and here. Congratulations to Bob Koester, and thanks to this great man for all he and his efforts have done to enrich our lives.
