Shad Harris's New Band
"The Groovenators"

Perform September 1st at The Saloon

The Groovenators consist of Shad Harris on vocals and keytar; Gary Hamilton on guitar, tenor sax, and vocals; Dave Peters on drums; and Myron Pipkin on bass. The Groovenators are a funky, soulful, swinging, West Coast Blues Band, based in California's Big Central Valley.

Stockton, CA, August 29, 2007 -- The Groovenators consist of Shad Harris on vocals and keytar; Gary Hamilton on guitar, tenor sax, and vocals; Dave Peters on drums; and Myron Pipkin on bass. They will be playing this Saturday, September 1st, 2007, 9:30 pm at The Saloon, 1232 Grant Street (between Columbus and Vallejo in the scenic heart of North Beach), San Francisco, CA 94133 (415) 989-7666. *The Bay Bridge will be closed that weekend, so you will have to use either the San Mateo or Golden Gate Bridge to get over to North Beach.

Yes, Shad is back and after playing mostly drums, but also, his share of guitar, bass, keyboards, and even some real blues harmonica, for 25 years in and around Northern California with the best bands around, Shad Harris became the original drummer for the Tommy Castro Band. He spent over five years with Tommy. And alas, in Ocotober 2000 Shad suffered a serious stroke. For the last seven years, Shad has been on the rehab and recovery trail. After a couple of years of therapy he regained limited use of his hands and his longtime friend Gary Hamilton encouraged him to pursue a comeback by playing keyboard in his band "Hambone."

Shad's abilities were limited at first but Gary and a few other close friends were supportive and the gig schedule was just enough and little by little Shad's keyboard chops got better. Shad then discovered the Roland AX-7 Keytar. In early 2007 Shad met with Gary Hamilton, Artis Joyce, and Dave Peters and asked them to join with him to form "The Groovenators." The Groovenators are a funky, soulful, swinging, West Coast Blues Band based in California's Big Central Valley. Shad is the bandleader but the band is a testament to True, Honest, Loyal, Friendship. The band's motto is: There is no "I" in band and their mission statement is: "To Protect and Serve The Groove."

>>>>> Down Home Blues Festival: This Sunday, September 2, 2007 (Labor Day weekend), the Rhythm Room proudly presents a Down Home Blues Festival featuring an amazing lineup of legendary and veteran artists. Appearing at the festival will be Honeyboy Edwards, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Tomcat Courtney, Big Pete Pearson & The Rhythm Room All-Stars, and Paris James; plus, there will be a blues photo show and sale by award winning blues photographer, David Horwitz. This show marks a rare Phoenix appearance by the legendary Honeyboy Edwards, now 92 years old. Honeyboy was friends with Robert Johnson, and performed throughout the South in the 1930s and 1940s before settling in Chicago, where he now resides. His music is a glimpse into the deep past of the blues. Joining the lineup will be Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, best known as the long time drummer in Muddy Waters’ band. Willie will be performing a set on vocals and harmonica, and backing Honeyboy Edwards on the drums. Also on the show will be the 78 year old Texas bluesman, Tomcat Courtney, who is an amazing singer and guitarist, somewhat reminiscent of Lightnin’ Hopkins. The host band for the evening will be The Rhythm Room All-Stars, and their featured vocalist, Big Pete Pearson, will contribute a set to the night’s proceedings. The show will open with a set by Phoenix’s own Paris James, who personifies the down-home blues tradition. Please come early and stay late, because the show will move quickly from act to act, and you wouldn’t want to miss any part of this. Doors open at 7pm for this show. Tickets are $15 (advance or day of show), with advance tickets available at the Rhythm Room, all Ticketmaster store locations, Charge by Phone: (480)784-4444, or Ticketmaster.com. The Rhythm Room is located at 1019 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Delicious Rack Shack Barbeque will be available at this event. This night will be patio smoking only, no indoor smoking will be permitted.

>>>>> Bo Diddley Photo Page Added: Check out our new tribute page to the great Bo Diddley, a legend in both blues and Rock ‘N Roll. The page features both vintage and contemporary photos of Bo, including a beautiful shot of Bo and Chico Chism. To see this page, click here. Also check out new photos on the Magic Slim page, and a new page devoted to France’s Virus De Blues Big Pete Pearson cover.

>>>>> Great Airplay and Press on New Releases: Special thanks to the many DJs around the world who are beginning to play the two new Blue Witch Records releases, House Rockin' & Blues Shoutin', a various artists blues compilation celebrating the Rhythm Room 15 year anniversary, and the new album by Dave Riley & Bob Corritore, Travelin' The Dirt Road. Also thanks to recent press on both these releases, in Big City Blues, Blues Festival E-Guide, Supporting the Blues on MySpace, MusicForAmerica.org, and In A Blue Mood Blogspot. Click here for House Rockin' & Blues Shoutin' reviews, and here for the Travelin' The Dirt Road reviews. More reviews and station play lists are coming in every day, again, a heartfelt thank you for this support.

>>>>> September 11th Blues: Louisiana Red’s impassioned "September 11th Blues", from the No Turn On Red CD on HighTone Records, commemorates this unfortunate American tragedy. As we approach the sixth anniversary of September 11, 2001, we encourage our readership to take a listen to this song in this week of remembrance.

>>>>> Bob’s Friend Guitar Ray appearing at the Rhythm Room Saturday: Bob’s friend, Guitar Ray from the Netherlands, will make his first Phoenix appearance on Saturday, September 1, 2007 at the Rhythm Room. Bob had the honor of sharing the lineup with Ray at the 2006 Marco Fiume Blues Passions Festival in Rossano, Italy. To see photos from this festival, click here. Ray is a fine guitar player with a modern blues touch, who works frequently in Europe fronting his own band, Guitar Ray and the Rhythm Dukes, and with The Backbones. Also appearing on the bill will be the Anna Warr and Bad News Blues Band, both from Tucson. Doors open at 8pm, cover charge is $7. Delicious Rack Shack Barbeque will be available at this event. >>>>> Bo Diddley suffers heart attack; Rock pioneer is in stable condition: This just in from NME (Note that Bo Diddley recently suffered a stroke May 13, 2007):

"Bo Diddley suffered a heart attack during a medical check-up in a Florida hospital and is now in stable condition, his spokeswoman said today (August 28). The 78-year-old rock pioneer felt ill during his checkup at North Florida Regional Medical Center, and was transferred to the emergency room where the heart attack occurred. He then underwent a surgical procedure to help the blood flow to his heart, reports Reuters. Diddley, whose real name is Ellas Bates, has been ailing in recent months. He suffered a stroke in May that impaired his ability to speak, and has lost toes to diabetes. The rhythm guitar style he pioneered has influenced several major rock bands including The Rolling Stones and U2." -NME

Detroit Women's Newsletter

As you might have guessed --  Detroit Women have been sassing all over the country and up in Canada this summer, singing at some of the most prestigious international festivals. We've tried to leave an indelible mark everywhere we've been. With a name like Detroit Women, you know, we've gotta represent!

We're on the road this weekend, heading to the Eastside -- Sterling Heights, Michigan for Sterling Fest. Come on out, it's a huge event full of art, jazz and . . . us. Oh, yeah ex-Styx man Dennis DeYoung will be there and those other Detroit Women -- The Detroit Shock will be there too. We'll be performing Saturday, Aug. 4 at 3:30 p.m. on the Suds & Sounds Stage. They say there could be 200,000 people visiting Sterling Heights this weekend. Wow!

The summer wouldn't be complete without next week's trip west to the Grand Rapids area for the Cowpie Blues Festival (Aug.11) followed by one up north to Gaylord for a concert. We're also visiting Canada again, so check out our schedule in the column at right. Also check our calendar for updates.....

Click here for a new video interview Rockabilly Magazine recently conducted with Lee Rocker. Lee discusses his career, rockabilly music, The Stray Cats, and his brand new album, BLACK CAT BONE, available now.

Lee Rocker is a legendary figure in American roots music as bassist for the platinum-selling Stray Cats as well as a series of critically acclaimed solo recordings. Now with BLACK CAT BONE, Lee returns with the toughest album of his career. With his band rocking, rolling, and burning behind him, Lee's driving bass, rough-edged vocals, and fresh original songs take everything to wild new heights.

Order an autographed copy of Lee Rocker's BLACK CAT BONE for the sale price of $14.98 (includes free U.S. shipping).

Koko Taylor, Marcia Ball, and Lil’ Ed Williams all received top honors from Living Blues magazine in their just-published Readers’ and Critics’ Polls. Williams, leader of the houserocking Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials, was named Blues Artist of the Year (Male) in both the Readers’ and the Critics’ Poll. Taylor, world-renowned as Queen of the Blues, was named Blues Artist of the Year (Female). Texas pianist/vocalist Marcia Ball was named Most Outstanding Musician in the Readers’ Poll.

Following the success of Country Ghetto, the label debut from Jacksonville, FL-based JJ Grey & MOFRO, Alligator Records will reissue the band’s first two independent releases (credited solely as MOFRO) on October 23, 2007.

Both Blackwater (originally released in 2001

on the Fog City label) and Lochloosa (originally released in 2004 on Swampland) have been unavailable for over a year. The albums are highly sought after by the band’s wildly enthusiastic fan base. Both CDs feature the distinctive “front porch soul” created by gifted songwriter and vocalist JJ Grey. JJ Grey comes from a long tradition of Southern storytellers, and his songs oftentimes use the loss of his natural surroundings and the marginalization of the Southern culture he grew up in as a metaphor for universal truths. The band delivers his material with brilliant musicianship, resulting in music that is thought provoking, rhythmically dynamic and texturally mesmerizing. Since the release of Country Ghetto, the band has received rave reviews in USA Today, The New York Times, Harp, Paste, Billboard, Guitar World, No Depression, Relix, Jambase and many other major daily, regional, and on-line publications.

In other JJ Grey & MOFRO news, the band will perform live and host the 1st Annual Blackwater Soul Revue at the newly renovated St. Augustine Amphitheatre in St. Augustine, FL on Sunday, September 2. This will be first public show at the theatre since undergoing a $3.5 million dollar upgrade. The other artists on the bill, hand selected by Grey, include Los Lobos, Tony Joe White, The Lee Boys, The Legendary JC’s, Willie Green and Will Conner. Grey describes the event and the line-up as only he can--“One day and one night of great music by people who possess distinctly regional flavor, and who sound like home in their own unique ways. All of this in a place inhabited by a spoonful of old school Spanish Minorcans, a dash of country fried Crackers, and a sprinkling of tourists from all over all of that stirred into a low country boil of beach, sun and bikinis in the oldest town in America.”

Concert information is as follows:
Sunday, September 2 The St. Augustine Amphitheatre
