>>>>> Blues Harmonica Master Carey Bell Passes
(November 14, 1936 to May 6, 2007):

It is with great sadness that we pass on the news that blues harmonica master Carey Bell died of heart failure last night at 9:30pm at Kindred Hospital in Chicago. He was 70 years old. Carey had been hospitalized three weeks ago in a diabetic coma. The doctors were able to revive him and get his vital signs to a pretty good place, but they found many other health problems, and had told Bob and Susan Koester that Carey was not likely to leave the facility. This news comes at a time of great loss for the blues, as so many of the masters of this genre are leaving us. Our thoughts and prayers are with Carey's son Lurrie, who also recently lost his wife, Susan Greenberg.

Born in Macon, Mississippi in 1936, Carey Bell learned harmonica at early age. He would move to Chicago to stay with his godfather, pianist Lovie Lee. While in Chicago, he befriended both Little Walter and Big Walter Horton who became major influences in his style. He worked in the bands of Johnny Young, Honeyboy Edwards, Earl Hooker, Willie Dixon, and Muddy Waters early on in his Chicago career. Carey's 1969 debut album, Blues Harp on Delmark Records showed him to be a brilliant singer and harmonica player with a unique mastery of the chromatic harmonica. This album elevated Carey beyond sideman status to that of a band leader, Three years later he was featured on the Alligator release Big Walter Horton with Carey Bell, which cemented his stature as one of the windy city's top harmonica men. Carey would go on to record albums on other labels such as JSP, Blind Pig, ABC Bluesway, and Rooster Blues. He also made great recordings as a cherished sideman with the greatest of Chicago Blues artists including Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Eddie Clearwater, Eddie Taylor, Sunnyland Slim, Louisiana Red, Earl Hooker, Robert Nighthawk, Eddie C. Campbell, W.W. Williams, Little Mack Simmons, Big Walter Horton, Lovie Lee, Johnny Littlejohn, Bob Margolin, Jimmy Rogers, Bob Riedy, Buster Benton, and others. Carey also was a part of historic gathering called Harp Attack on Alligator Records, which put Carey together with fellow Chicago blues harp masters Junior Wells, James Cotton, and Billy Branch. Carey and his son Lurrie had just released a magnificent CD and DVD on Delmark Records called Gettin' Up, which will stand as the final work of his brilliant career. We will miss Carey Bell and the great joy that his warm personality and his live performances gave us. His legacy is secure as a master of Chicago blues and his stunning recordings will live on forever as definitive works. Funeral information shall be forthcoming.

NEW BLIND PIG RELEASES

May

On May 8th, Blind Pig Records will release new CDs from Harper, Hamilton Loomis, and Dave Hole.  But as a member of Blind Pig's email list, you can get these releases now for $15 each, and for only $10 each as part of our 5 CDs for $50 offer.  To order, see details below.

HARPER  "DAY BY DAY"
Part harmonica wizard and part rhythmic explorer, Harper is a fiery artist who blurs the lines between rock, blues, soul, and world music.  His new release, Day By Day, is a worthy followup to his groundbreaking U.S. debut, Down To The Rhythm.  It displays his trademark virtuoso harp performances, distinctive instrumentation, deeply soulful grooves, and instantly memorable songs, and provides a prime example of why his unique roots music style occupies a category of its own.  Harper has been described as a singer with the deep soul of Motown, a harmonica player who can graft Sonny Boy II and Little Walter with John Popper, a songwriter who tells his own compelling stories in an unhurried, J.J. Cale-like manner, and a musical visionary who is unafraid to mix the didgeridoo, an important part of the indigenous culture of his Australian homeland, with infectious modern percussive rhythms.

HAMILTON LOOMIS  "AIN'T JUST TEMPORARY"
Hamilton Loomis is one of the young artists at the forefront of bringing blues into the 21st century and redefining it for a contemporary audience.  Ain't Just Temporary is a tasty second helping of Hamilton's patented "blues outside the box," and features a killer duet with his friend and mentor Bo Diddley, who contributes his unmistakable voice and funky tremolo guitar to "You Got To Wait," a tune he and Hamilton co-wrote for the album.  On his new release, Loomis masterfully blends his myriad influences (blues, Motown, Texas swing, soul), at once forging ahead into new musical territories while maintaining a strong connection to the blues legends (such as Diddley, Johnny Copeland, Gatemouth Brown, and Albert Collins) that took him under their wings at an early age.

DAVE HOLE  "ROUGH DIAMOND"
Dave Hole, another Australian artist, is well known for his guitar mastery. Since his recording debut fifteen years ago, Dave's records and live performances have drawn raves from countless international publications, and garnered legions of fans.  "Nothing interferes with Hole's searing guitar when he is in full flight," said Rolling Stone magazine, while Guitar World added, "Hole produces solo upon blistering solo that is exhilaratingly relentless."  His newest recording, Rough Diamond, amply reaffirms his title as the reigning master of the slide guitar. His fret-melting guitar riffs are infused with the same spirit as those of such blues and rock slide legends as Duane Allman, Johnny Winter, and Elmore James.

To purchase any of these titles for $15, click HERE.  To get these CDs for only $10 each as part of our 5 CDs for $50 offer, click HERE.  Songs samples from each album are available for listening at both locations.

Gregor Hilden Band: Live At The Luna Bar

Featuring Special Guests: Harriet Lewis, Wilson B., Johnny Rogers, Keith Dunn, Thomas Feldmann, Christian Kappe

Info
94 Minuten Spielzeit, 4-Seiten-Booklet. DVD-9, PAL 4:3, Stereo (2.0), DTS (5.0) & Dolby Digital (5.0), Region Free.

Blues-Gitarre in Deutschland?

For almost 20 years now, the Münster-born guitarist has been setting the tone in the German scene. He has played with the big boys, such as Rory Gallagher, Albert Collins and Jerry Lee Lewis, and has revealed various sources of influence on his exquisite albums, from Peter Green to Larry Carlton.
The bandleader now presents his first DVD production and besides his quartet, he has invited some top-notch guests, such as Johnny Rogers, Harriet Lewis, Wilson B. and Keith Dunn. The Gregor Hilden Band has a stunning musical grasp and a great deal of joy at playing, producing a captivating mix of styles ranging from traditional and modern blues to jazz, soul and swing. Gregor Hilden’s elegant guitar playing, his cultivated and sensitive solos, his perfectly targeted phrasings and his natural tone demonstrate consummate maturity and deeply-felt musicality. It’s a fascinating concert, which will swell the heart of every blues fan.

THE SUBTONES (A)
Freitag, 11.

IMPERIAL CROWNS (USA)
Donnerstag, 17. Mai 2007, 20.30 Uhr!

Crown & Glory“… back at Bluesiana, the hottest Live Music Spot !!!!

LOST COMPADRES (A)
Samstag, 26. Mai 2007, 21.00 Uhr!
Americana/Alternative Country

Randy McAllister Nominated in Three Categories for Australia's BlueStar Awards

Dallas, Texas - 4-30-07 - Singer/Songwriter, Randy McAllister has been nominated for three categories in Australia's BlueStar Music Awards (http://www.bluestarawards.com/nom_win.htm). Randy received nominations for "Best Instrumentalist Harmonica", "Best International Vocal - Male" along with Buddy Guy, Ike Turner and Tom Waits, and "Best International Solo Artist" where he joined Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan. Long considered one of the top Singer/Songwritiers in the US by critics and media, Big City Blues called Randy, "One of the World's...Top Blues Artists". Baltimore Bluesrag said "Absolutely Stunning!".

The Bluestar nominations are even more meaningful because they represent the votes of fans in Australia. Australia's BlueStar Awards and nominations are based on fan votes. Voting is restricted to residents of Australia. "Never having traveled to Australia, I am sure Randy would love the opportunity." According to Manager Chris Ownbey, "We certainly wouldn't rule out the possibility."

Randy's recent 16-track release of "Flying High While Staying Low Down" has been critically acclaimed worldwide with accolades by top Blues, Roots, Americana publications. It seems fans down under are spinning and loving his latest release. It is getting increasing air-play at home in the US, but apparently doing even better in Australia where there are fewer genre restrictions on what gets played. Clearly Australian fans are hearing a world class sound they like.

Randy has released 7 albums in the last 9 years with an 8th on the way in June. His up-
coming "Dope Slap Soup" has 5-tracks previewed on the late 2006 release of "Flying High While Staying Low Down". The singer/songwriter has recorded just a portion of his extensive library with over 80 original songs reaching across genre. His catalog includes Blues, Roots, Americana, Texas Blues and more. His lyrics often reflect the challenges we all share as he celebrates the successes of every day life. Always fascinating, topical and fun, the melodies are a perfect match. Intricate arrangements with stellar guitar, harmonica and organ solos. Get ready for some hard driving, high energy music anytime you witness Randy live.

Randy McAllister is one of the premier singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist to emerge from Texas. Heartbreak, humor, high hair and tall Texas tales all play a part in the song writing of Randy McAllister. His music has been hailed as some of the most original and innovative being made today. While comparison's are not easy, it has been said that his music is a cross between Doug Sahm, John Hiatt and Delbert McClinton, with a blues man's background and sensibilities thrown into the mix.

Raised in the small Texas town of Novice, McAllister is a fifth-generation Texan, whose father was both a fireman and musician. His father was a drummer in a band called "The Flames". At a very young age, Randy followed in his fathers foots steps. He began to take up drumming, but the drums were just the beginning for Randy, as he began to develop as a singer and songwriter.

McAllister has released 7 critically praised albums beginning with his debut "Diggin' for Sofa Change", followed by "Grease, Grit, Dirt and Spit", the much heralded "Double Rectified Bust Head", 2002 GRAMMY NOMINEE "Givers and Takers", "Temporary Fixes" and A "Little Left of Center" all built on a firm foundation that is his songwriting. His much anticipated Compilation CD, "Flying High While Staying Low Down" was released in late 2006.
